Vocal Vocabulary – Bridging Languages, Cultures, and Voices
Vocal Vocabulary is BCBC’s exciting new project connecting the centuries-old techniques of bel canto with the diverse linguistic landscape of South Africa — empowering singers to learn in their native languages.
Through this initiative, we are breaking down barriers of language, distance, and tradition. Developed in partnership with North-West University’s Language Directorate, we seek to make classical vocal training truly global.
Why It Matters
In a country with 11 official languages, South Africa offers an ideal setting to explore how vocal pedagogy can become more inclusive and effective. As singers from different linguistic backgrounds learn concepts like portamento or legato, this project fosters a deep understanding that transcends memorization and connects with their cultural heritage.
By addressing the challenges of language in classical singing, we’re opening doors to singers who might otherwise feel excluded from this art form.
Our Vision
Vocal Vocabulary envisions a world where vocal training is accessible to everyone, regardless of language. Imagine Italian techniques explained in Setswana, or an isiZulu speaker confidently performing a bel canto piece. Through this groundbreaking project, we aim to:
- Empower singers to connect with the classical tradition in ways that are personal and meaningful.
- Preserve cultural heritage by allowing singers to learn in their own languages.
- Build a global community that celebrates linguistic diversity while advancing vocal pedagogy.
Our Innovative Solution
- Multilingual Mastery: We’re creating a library of videos featuring native speakers explaining bel canto techniques in multiple languages, from Setswana to Afrikaans to isiZulu.
- Group Dynamics: We use group singing to foster a collaborative environment that allows students to discover their voices in a supportive, multicultural setting.
- Universal Accessibility: Our foundational bel canto exercises on simple vowels transcend language, allowing singers worldwide to engage and learn.
- Digital Empowerment: Our website will host all resources, transforming it into a global hub for multilingual vocal education.
Impact
This project is more than a series of lessons; it’s a journey of empowerment. By offering resources in multiple languages, Vocal Vocabulary democratizes access to vocal training, creates a platform where cultural heritage is respected, and connects singers across continents.
Each singer who learns bel canto in their native language gains not just skill, but also a deeper connection to the art.
The Plan
Starting with virtual classes in 2024, Vocal Vocabulary will hold an intensive residency at North-West University in August 2025. This program includes:
- Group and individual sessions on bel canto techniques
- Recording of multilingual explanatory videos
- Creation of “how-to” video resources with student groups
- Development of a multilingual resource library available to a global audience
Following South Africa, we plan to expand this model worldwide, with future phases exploring poetic forms, pronunciation, and phrasing in diverse languages.
