Bel Canto Sunday Matinée
Bel Canto Boot Camp is passionate about inviting audience members into the singer’s process and encouraging them to use their own voices too. We often make group singing with our audience part of our in-person concerts.
Bel Canto Sunday Matinée, hosted by BCBC Mentor Steven Tharp, is an opportunity for audience members and performers alike to learn from the great singers of the past by exploring historical recordings together on Zoom.
These events serve dual purposes: helping participants refine their understanding of historical bel canto techniques, and educating audience members about the aesthetics of the unamplified voice.
Why It Matters
We believe that an educated audience is an engaged audience. Learning about the human voice fosters a deep appreciation for the superhuman skills of the bel canto singer. And learning the vocabulary singers use to discuss voice building and repertoire allows the audience member to become an insider.
Impact
Sunday Matinée often directly follows virtual training sessions for singers around the world. Audience members are invited to attend these technique sessions, and most of the singers attend the listening hour as well.
Seeing singers and audience members talking together about what they admire in the recordings is a joy for all.
How wonderful to be in a room with so much passion. I’m really a neophyte when it comes to opera, but I do love it! Just hearing those old recordings sent shivers up my spine. Thank YOU!
